Muiredeach High Cross Pendant
Muiredach’s Small High Cross, Monasterboice, Co. Louth, is an outstanding example of the high crosses of the early Christian period in Ireland. It stands 17 feet and 8 inches high, with almost every inch of the surface ornamented with sculptured panels of excellent design and workmanship. The cross is considered to be the one of the most beautiful of the Irish High Crosses which are stioll standing.
The cross is inscribed in old Irish with what translates as “A Prayer for Muiredeach”. Muiredeach was the abbot of Monasterboice who died in 922 and for whom this cross was made.
The west face head of the Cross depicts an elaborate Crucifixion scene while the east face head shows the last judgment. Other scenes on the cross include the life of Our Lord, Old Testament stories and stories of Saints and other symbolic figures.
