High Cross of Moone Pendant
The High Cross Of Moone in Co. Kildare, stands 17.5 feet high it carries 51 sculptured panels of scriptural scenes. Unlike other crosses The Cross of Moone was lost for centuries, buried and in pieces. The capstone of the cross is still missing. It was put together in the middle of the 19th Century by members of the O’Shaughnessy family who found the first piece of the cross. The cross is believed to date fom the 9th century and is found on the site of an early Columban Foundation.
The cross is engraved with the crucifixion scene but also has intricate Celtic and geometric designs and human figures. Scholars say that it is the first cross on which scenes from the Old Testament occur in a regular program.
