The Cross of Durrow, Co. Offaly is found North of Tullamore on the Durrow abbey estate is the site of the monastery of Durrow founded by St. Colmcille. The famous book of Durrow, now in Trinity College Dublin, was written here in about the seventh century. One cross now remains on the site in Durrow, the Cross of Durrow on which this pendant is modelled.
The Cross is inscribed with “Pray for Dubtach who erected this Cross”. Dubtach was the head of the Colomban order from 927 – 938AD. The original cross is made of sandstone and features the scene of the crucifixion of Christ and other religious scenes as well as many beautiful panels of varying interlace design.
